George Edgar Filkins was born at Aurora, N.Y., on August 1, 1842, and died at San Francisco on May 15, 1887. At age 19 he enlisted in the 1st Regt. Wis. Volunteer Infty. He fought in the Battles of Falling Water, Chattanoogo (sic), Nashville, Chaplin Hills, Jefferson, Stone River, and Missionary Ridge, and was honorably mustered out of service with his regiment on April 7, 1866. On Nov. 5, 1883, he was elected a Companion of the 1st Class Military Order, Loyal Legion of the U.S., and he was also a member of the G.A.R.
