In Pike County, abolitionists and other residents aided escaping enslaved persons along the Underground Railroad. An Elm Grove abolitionist maintained an isolated station that provided safety for fugitives traveling the hostile route from Houston Hollow in Scioto County to safe places in Ross County, where other conductors helped them continue toward Canada. At Straight Creek, Christopher Brown, a former slave, conducted runaways to Chillicothe. In the P.P. settlement in northwest Pike County, the Barnett and Muntz families hid fugitives and took them to the next safe place. Oral history says that someone at the Eager Inn on a post road connecting Adams and Ross Counties received word when runaways were approaching that area, then passed the information to the Muntz or Barnett families so they could prepare to receive them. Other Pike County residents actively assisted runaway slaves at the Carrs Run and East Jackson settlements.
