Waxhaw Presbyterian Church, about 5 miles north, was organized in 1755 as the first church in upper South Carolina. President Andrew Jackson, who was born nearby, was baptized there. His father lies in the churchyard with other early settlers of the Waxhaw’s and many veterans of various wars, including Gen. WM. R. Davie, Maj. Robt. Crawford, Maj. John Barkley, Col. J. H. Witherspoon, and Capt. Isaac Donnom.
