On his last Kentucky raid, Confederate General John H. Morgan and his raiders entered the state on June 1, 1864, took Mount Sterling on June 8, lost it on June 9, took Lexington on June 10, and Cynthiana on June 11. United States forces under General S. G. Burbridge defeated the Confederates the next day. Morgan retreated through here and reached Virginia on June 20. His raiders never recovered from this reverse.
