The Menger Hotel was recognized for its nurturing atmosphere for William Sidney Porter, known as O. Henry, Theodore Roosevelt, Sidney Lanier, and Oscar Wilde. It was also commemorated as the Texas residence of Sidney Lanier, the American poet and musician born in Macon, Georgia, on February 3, 1842, who died in Lynn, North Carolina, on September 7, 1881, and lived in San Antonio, Texas, from November 1872 to April 1873. A quoted tribute declared, “His song was only living aloud His work a singing with his hand.”
