Weedon Island Preserve is a 3,190-acre protected area on Tampa Bay in St. Petersburg, Florida, valued for both its estuarine habitats and its archaeological importance. Its mangrove forests, flatwoods, hammocks, wetlands, and uplands support native wildlife, while shell mounds show that people lived here for thousands of years. Named for Tampa doctor and amateur archaeologist Leslie Washington Weedon, the site entered the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, opened for public use in 1980, and has been managed by Pinellas County since 1993. Trails, paddling routes, fishing access, and the Cultural and Natural History Center make it both a habitat reserve and an educational destination.
