Sunken Gardens is a four-acre botanical park in St. Petersburg, Florida, founded in 1903 when George Turner Sr. drained a shallow lake on his property and created a private garden of tropical and subtropical plantings. By the 1920s it had become a nursery and visitor attraction, and in 1935 formal admission established it as a classic Florida roadside destination. Popular for decades, it remained in the Turner family until the city bought it in 1999. Today it preserves one of Florida’s oldest surviving ornamental garden attractions, with extensive plant collections, flamingos, historic wedding and event spaces, and a neighboring historic building now used as a children’s museum.
