The 91st Infantry Division was activated on 5 September 1917 at Camp Lewis, Washington, and designated the Wild West Division, adopting the battle cry “Powder River! Let’er Buck!” in 1918. During World War I, it fought in the Lorraine, Meuse Argonne, and Ypres-Lys campaigns and suffered 6,108 casualties, including 1,454 killed in action. The division was reactivated on 15 August 1942 at Camp White, Oregon, moved on 1 September 1943 to the IV Corps maneuver area at Bend, Oregon, then transferred to Camp Adair, Oregon, on 4 November 1943. It departed for North Africa on 3 April 1944, and in June 1944 moved to Italy, where it participated in the Rome-Arno, Northern Apennines, and Po Valley campaigns, suffering 8,744 casualties, including 1,575 killed in action, during 271 days in combat. It is remembered for the gallant men of the 91st Infantry Division who died in defense of their country and for all who served in the cause of freedom.
