The East Fork Hotel was one of Gardnerville's original businesses, standing on Main Street at Gilman Ave. Brothers George and Charles Brown built the 20' x 50' building in 1892-93, with a saloon in front, a small residence in the back, and upstairs rooms that rented for $1-1.50 per night. A fire that began in the cellar in 1899 caused considerable structural damage and required extensive repairs, but all 18 guests escaped unharmed. In 1903 the Browns sold the hotel to Charles and Henry Morrison, and by 1909 it was known for excellent hotel service at moderate rates and a bar stocked with liquor and cigars. Beginning in 1914, a series of Basque immigrants leased the property, leading to Raymond and Gorgonia Borda purchasing it in 1921. Because prohibition had begun the year before, the hotel became the scene of several federal raids. Mr. Borda was arrested three times in 1922-23 for violating prohibition, and the barroom was closed for eight months under the abatement law. Later lessees also faced prohibition violations, and in July 1926 John "Super Six" Larralde, then leasing the property, was arrested in a federal raid and sentenced to 12 months in the Washoe County jail. That proved to be the establishment's last raid. Mr. and Mrs. Borda lived there until their deaths, and the building also came to be known as the Borda Building. After a fire on July 17, 1986, it was closed down, stood empty, and was torn down in 2014 because of safety concerns.
