Fossil Ridge Wilderness is a protected mountain area in west-central Colorado in the Gunnison National Forest, northeast of Gunnison. Covering 13,992 acres, it is centered on Fossil Ridge, a high exposed ridge of Paleozoic carbonate rock. The area is especially significant for the ancient epeiric sea fossils preserved there, which give it its name and much of its scientific value. Its landscape ranges from about 8,880 feet at Summerville Creek to 13,254 feet on Henry Mountain, spanning forested lower elevations to alpine country. Wildlife in the area includes elk, deer, mountain goats, and bighorn sheep.
