Fort Loramie’s town crest brings together elements seen as central to the community’s creation. Its upper left section represents the frontier before Fort Loramie became a village, with a hatchet and musket crossed by a peace pipe to indicate that the Greenville Treaty Line runs through the village. The upper right shows the Berlin Bear, the insignia of Berlin, Germany, chosen to reflect that mostly German immigrants came to a wilderness area that was named Berlin before the village was incorporated. The lower left depicts the canal and a canal boat, representing businesses whose early success was tied in part to the canal that ran through the center of town. The lower right shows a plow, a plowed field, and a church in the background, symbolizing farming, the clearing of the land, and the importance of religion to the settlers. Dividing the crest’s sections is a trade silver cross made as a facsimile of one of the early artifacts found in the area.
