Charles River Reservation is a 17-mile urban park and recreation corridor along the Charles River through Boston, Cambridge, Watertown, and Newton. Much of it took shape in the early 20th century when the 1910 Charles River Dam transformed the lower river from a tidal estuary into the freshwater Charles River Basin and helped create major landscapes such as the Esplanade. The reservation includes a nationally recognized historic district, habitats for hundreds of species, and places linked to Frederick Law Olmsted, John F. Kennedy, and later civic activism. Its modern dam, fish passage, and broad recreational facilities continue to support both public use and ecological restoration.
