During the period of 13 July 1942 through 15 January 1945, World War II glider pilots received advance training and silver “G” wings at South Plains Army Air Field in Lubbock, Texas. These volunteers flew fragile, unarmed gliders on eight major airborne invasions of Europe and Southeast Asia, and many gave their lives in service to their country.
