Silent Wings Museum in Lubbock, Texas preserves the history of American World War II glider pilots at the former airport terminal on the grounds of South Plains Army Air Field, where many trained from 1942 to 1945. Lubbock’s climate and flying conditions made it well suited for glider instruction in engine-less aircraft used to deliver troops and supplies behind enemy lines. The museum grew from veterans’ efforts to save the record of the U.S. military glider program, beginning with the restoration of a WACO CG-4A glider and the opening of a first museum in Terrell in 1984. Since 2001, the Lubbock museum has expanded that mission through exhibits, archives, research, and restoration.
