Ely Samuel Parker was a Seneca Indian Civil War veteran and sachem of the Iroquois Confederacy who became first master of Akron Lodge 527 in 1851, served as military secretary to Lieutenant General Grant as a lieutenant colonel in 1862, was breveted brigadier general of U.S. Volunteers in 1864, and became U.S. Commissioner of Indian Affairs in 1865.
