Near this site, Fort Elder was created in 1783 by Robert Elder. His cabin was a plain log structure, strongly built with heavy doors, known as a block house, and situated near a spring. Fort Elder often became a place of refuge when Indians were seen lurking nearby. Neighbors surrounding the Derry settlement gathered at the fort to spend the night and resumed their work in the fields the following day.
