Rishel Peak is a 6,212-foot mountain in western Utah’s Silver Island Mountains, rising steeply above the Bonneville Salt Flats and the broad Great Salt Lake Desert. Its roughly 2,000 feet of relief in just 1.5 miles makes it a striking landmark over the flat salt desert. The peak was officially named in 1960 for William D. “Bill” Rishel, who lived from 1869 to 1947. In 1907, Rishel became the first person to test the salt flats for driving by taking a Pierce-Arrow onto their surface, an early step in the history of a landscape later closely tied to speed records.
