In far southwestern Virginia near Ewing and Cumberland Gap, this park preserves a section of the Wilderness Road, built by Daniel Boone in 1775 and later used by about 300,000 settlers moving west over the next 25 years. It protects one of the places where the route’s original course can still be read in the landscape. Its reconstructed Martin’s Station recalls the only intermediate station between the Virginia blockhouse and Crab Orchard during the road’s busiest years. The park also includes the 1878 Karlan Mansion, linking the frontier migration route to later local settlement and community history.
