Rio Grande Valley State Park is a protected ribbon of open space running along both sides of the Rio Grande through Albuquerque, established in 1983 and spanning about 4,300 acres from Sandia Pueblo to Isleta Pueblo. Rather than operating as one unified park, it is managed by multiple agencies. Its defining landscape is the bosque, a cottonwood floodplain forest, with trails, ponds, and wetlands that support recreation and nature study. Used for walking, cycling, and horseback riding, it also includes the 16-mile Paseo del Bosque Trail, which connects major cultural and natural destinations and serves as both a transportation route and a vital urban green space.
