Leonard Williams was a heroic frontiersman and soldier who was made a colonel by his friend, President Sam Houston. After being a Comanche captive, he became a diplomat and Indian agent. He settled near here in 1845, built the area's first tank using a scraper of cowhide, and with his wife Nancy Isaacs had six children.
