Torrey's Trading Post No. 2 was the site of the greatest Indian council in the Republic of Texas, where President Sam Houston held the famous 1844 peace talks with assembled chiefs. The post served as a listening post for the frontier and, built and operated by George Barnard for Torrey's Trading Company, was important from 1844 to 1849 to white men in keeping peace with Indians.
