Gravehouses are unusual structures built to protect graves, usually with a gabled roof supported by wooden posts and often surrounded by hand-cut picket fences, and the Talbert-Pierson Cemetery contains fifteen of them sheltering members of the Talbert and Pierson families, dating from 1889 to 1949. Built when important family members died, these costly structures were reserved for patriarchs, small children, mothers who died young, and soldiers, and they reflected the deep faith and family traditions of Louisiana's Neutral Strip and its Upland South settlers. Some believe their one-room rectangular form echoed the Protestant country churches common across the South, while their purpose combined protection of the grave with the idea of a beautiful heavenly home. Custom held that the family built the gravehouse before sunset on the day of burial, using nearby timber shaped into slats and pickets, and their construction blended log house traditions with Victorian details such as forward-facing gables and ornamental trim. Though their exact origins remain unclear, historians believe gravehouses may have protected graves from scavenging animals and may connect to older European practices, and after World War II the tradition declined as cemeteries took on more maintenance and fencing reduced the need for such shelters. The Talbert family, said by family tradition to have come from Arkansas in 1820, belonged to the Upland South culture of small-farming, self-sufficient settlers whose religious beliefs and customs shaped cemeteries with features such as mounded graves, evergreens, decorations, gravehouses, and east-west burial orientation. The Talbert-Pierson collection is especially rare because so many survive in one cemetery, and despite slight alterations over time, the gravehouses retain a remarkable degree of original work.
