A pioneer sanctuary stood some 200 feet west atop the hill, and though it has long since vanished, its site is indicated by the Hutcheson Cemetery. It served as a landmark on maps of military operations by Federal armies moving east toward the Macon and Western Railroad, and numerous references to it appear in reports and dispatches dated August 29 and 30, 1864. The locality was of strategic importance because it lay midway across the wide front of Federal forces moving east, with the Army of the Tennessee on the right at Bethsaida Church and the Fourth and Twenty-third corps on the left en route to the railroad at and below Rough and Ready.
