Attakapas Wildlife Management Area is a 27,962-acre protected tract in south Louisiana spanning parts of St. Mary, St. Martin, and Iberia parishes in the Atchafalaya Basin. Acquired by the state in 1976 and managed chiefly by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, it consists of islands, marshes, bottomlands, and waterways accessible only by boat or kayak. Fishing and hunting define much of its use, supporting species from bass, crappie, and catfish to deer, alligators, waterfowl, and the Louisiana black bear. Management projects in 1999 and 2012 improved water control, habitat, and freshwater inflow for wetland wildlife in this working floodplain landscape.
