North Fork Road is an unpaved route in Glacier National Park that stretches nearly forty miles from the Lake McDonald area to the Canada-United States border through the remote North Fork country. It began in 1901 as a rough wagon road built by the Butte Oil Company to reach its oil well at Kintla Lake, then helped open the wider region to settlement and travel. From 1935 to 1945, the National Park Service strengthened it with culverts and drains. A proposed extension into Canada in 1933 was never built, and the idea was dropped by the 1950s. The road remains important as a largely rustic park route shaped by both resource exploration and later park development.
