Developed in 1937, the R-2800 was the first 18 cylinder radial engine. It produced 2,350 horsepower and weighed 2,000 lbs. Regarded at the time as the Cadillac of engines, it became a workhorse of World War II, powering the P-47 "Thunderbolt," the F6F "Hellcat," the F4U "Corsair," the P-61 "Black Widow" fighters, and the B-26 "Marauder" and A26 "Invader" bombers. The engine here is from an F4U "Corsair." This late model had a water injection system that increased horsepower to 2,500 hp, making the Corsair’s top speed 453 mph compared with the Hellcat’s 380 mph.
