Reuben Patrick was a detachment leader in the 14th Vol. Inf. USA force, which was engaged largely in this area. CSA forces camped near Ivyton in March, 1863, and on the night of the 20th, while a posted guard slept, Patrick boldly detached a gun from its carriage and hid it in the woods. It was their only artillery, a Williams Rapid Fire Gun. The CSA moved on and left the carriage behind. The gun was displayed for many years but is now lost. Patrick later served as a Kentucky legislator from 1863 to 1867.
