Established on 8/22/1749 by a treaty negotiated by Conrad Weiser and Canassatego, chief of the Onondaga Indians, Line Mountain extended from the Susquehanna to the Delaware River and served as the northern boundary of the province of PA. for almost 20 years. In the Onondaga language it was called "Cantawghy," and in the Delaware language "Makooniahy" or "Mahanoy." Near Mahanoy Creek, John Scull established a trading post in 1701. The Conestoga and Delaware Indians maintained one of their strongholds here until the Six Nations vanquished them. Frederick Muhlenberg, grandson of Conrad Weiser and first speaker to the First Congress of the U.S. of America, climbed to the mountain's summit to divide the 2700 acres of land Conrad Weiser had received from the Penns for his service as Indian ambassador. Colonel Henry Shoemaker and the PA. Alpine Club also made their annual pilgrimage to the mountain's summit.
