Whitehorse Mountain, called čubaliali in Lushootseed, rises sharply above the Sauk River Valley near Darrington at the western edge of Washington’s North Cascades. Though not exceptionally tall for the range, its north face gains about 6,000 feet in just 1.8 miles, making it a dominant landmark. Its first recorded ascent came in 1909 with Nels Bruseth, and climbers still know it for a strenuous standard route on the Northwest Shoulder as well as routes on the glacier and ridges. Its English name dates to 1894, and Indigenous tradition remembers čubaliali as a woman linked to a story involving Mount Higgins.
