Built about 1870, the Strawberry Patch House was the home of Dr. Haden E. McKay, who lived there until his death in 1898. Known locally as the Strawberry King, McKay, along with his brothers John and William T. McKay, grew strawberries and other fruit on their 100-acre farm. The McKays were the first in the area to ship refrigerated produce by rail to Chicago. In the company’s heyday, shipments consisted of five to ten carloads of berries per day. The house, listed in the National Register, is all that remains of the farm.
