Chester Alan Arthur State Historic Site
Fairfield, Vermont
History
1
In Fairfield, Vermont, this historic site is devoted to Chester A. Arthur, the twenty-first president of the United States, who was born in Vermont in 1829. It centers on a replica of the early nineteenth-century house long associated with his birth, together with a granite monument marking the place long believed to be his birthplace. The monument was dedicated in 1903, and the present house was built in 1953 using an old photograph of the original as a guide. The nearby Fairfield Baptist Church, where Arthur’s father served as preacher, is also part of the site’s story.
