David Farragut, a native of Stony Point (Low's Ferry), moved to New Orleans at the age of three. At the age of ten, he began a career with the U.S. Navy; circa 1827, pioneered a school for seamen; in 1841, improved hoisting machinery for ammunition; from 1850 to 1852, wrote the official book of ordnance regulations; and was a hero of the Civil War battles of New Orleans, Port Hudson, and Mobile. On July 26, 1866, David G. Farragut became the first admiral in the history of the U.S. Navy.
