James (Jim) Tidwell, Jr., was a driving force behind honoring Jellico area veterans who gave their lives in service to their country. As chairman of the Veterans Monument Committee, he worked tirelessly and inspired many others to help bring about its erection and dedication. In 1944, his rescue efforts after the Jellico Troop Train Disaster saved lives and relieved suffering. Deeply patriotic, he joined the US Navy at age 17 and served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He later undertook additional hazardous duty with the Allied Occupation Naval Force and volunteered during the early testing of the atomic bomb. His experiences under fire left him determined to honor and remember comrades who served honorably and selflessly to insure the continuance of liberty, and the monument was largely the result of that determination.
