Cicero Peak is a 6,168-foot mountain in the Black Hills of southwestern South Dakota, near Custer, Custer State Park, and Wind Cave National Park. It was named for rancher Cicero James Graham, who lived near its base from 1860 to 1930. A fire lookout tower built in 1939 and 1940 served for 34 years before its removal in 1980. The mountain is also tied to the region’s fire history through the 1990 Cicero Peak Fire, sparked by nearby logging equipment, which burned 14,203 acres, including 4,510 acres within Custer State Park. Together these connections reflect ranching, forest surveillance, and wildfire in the Black Hills.
