Men and women who answer the call to duty in war and peace serve the country with honor, often making the ultimate sacrifice to ensure the nation's freedom, and veterans of the past, present, and future are saluted by the grateful citizens of Cherokee County. A tribute by Father D. O'Brien, USMC, declares that the soldier, not the reporter, has given freedom of the press; not the poet, freedom of speech; not the campus organizer, the freedom to demonstrate; and not the lawyer, the right to a fair trial. It adds that the soldier who salutes the flag, serves under the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag allows the protester to burn the flag.
