Eagle Creek Covered Bridge
Science & Tech
Eagle Creek Covered Bridge, also known as the Bowman Bridge, stood in Byrd Township near Decatur in Brown County, Ohio. Built in 1875 as a Smith truss bridge, it represented a distinctive wooden truss design associated in Ohio with the Smith Bridge Co. Before it was washed away in 1997, it was the longest single-span covered bridge in the state. Its importance also rested on its rarity: when it was recognized in 1975, only 15 Smith truss bridges still survived in Ohio, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The bridge reflected both an unusual structural form and the fading legacy of rural Ohio’s historic covered bridges.
