Just outside Logan, Ohio, the Paul A. Johnson Pencil Sharpener Museum houses about 3,479 pencil sharpeners, regarded as the largest collection of its kind in the United States and notable for claiming no duplicates. The collection began in 1989 when the recently retired Rev. Paul Johnson received two metal car-shaped sharpeners from his wife, Charlotte, and turned that gift into a dedicated collecting hobby. After Johnson’s death in 2010, Charlotte moved the collection to the Hocking Hills Regional Welcome Center. Arranged by themes such as food, travel, and music, the display highlights the variety, materials, and design of an everyday tool transformed by personal devotion into an unusual local attraction.
