During the War between the States, a great revival of religious fervor led several Choctaw County Christian families in 1865 to kneel together in prayer and seek God’s guidance, resulting in the organization of South Union Church. The original church was built of huge logs in a pine grove near a spring of clear, cold, ever-flowing water. The Holy Spirit continued working through South Union, and in 1872 a camp meeting was organized on land given by William Parham Pollard, known as Grandpa Pollard, with additional land later given by S.E. Moss and Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Draper. At night the campground was lighted by huge pine torches set on earth-covered scaffolds, and the tabernacle, originally built by Arthur Tenhet, was lighted by candles made from beef tallow by the women of the church. A long blast from a Texas horn, often blown by one of the Moss boys, usually Wesley, using a horn owned by the John Buck family, called worshipers from miles around. A public school operated there for many years, and Confederate reunions were held annually as long as Confederate veterans lived. The church building was destroyed by a tornado in 1883 and rebuilt. On July 18, 1914, the tabernacle and some wooden tents burned accidentally, and the present structure was created immediately by church members, neighboring churches such as Old Lebanon Church, and other denominations and friends as a community effort, since South Union served as both a church and a community gathering place. The camp meeting was held late that year, the only time it was not held on the Friday before the fourth Sunday of July. In 1976, the church almost closed, but the situation reversed through the work of Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Blaine and the whole congregation. Innumerable hundreds have been converted to Christ at these camp meetings, many lives have been touched by the Holy Spirit, and some people were called to preach the gospel. Worshipers were often overwhelmed by receiving the Holy Spirit, as shown by shouts of happiness, speaking in tongues, and tears of joy, and another revival of the Holy Spirit has begun.
