The Chanute area honors its veterans past, present, and future for sacrifices made in protecting freedoms and a way of life. The Kansas National Guard unit in Chanute was organized on 25 February 1954 as Battery B 297th Field Artillery, reorganized on 1 March 1957 as Battery B 195th Field Artillery, and on 1 May 1957 as Company B 174th Military Police. On 1 April 1963 it became Company A 174th Quartermaster Battalion, and during the Vietnam War it was reorganized on 15 December 1967 as Company C 3rd Battalion 137th Infantry. On 1 February 1976 the unit became Company C 891st Engineer Battalion. Many citizens of Chanute and the surrounding area served proudly and honorably in the Chanute National Guard, with many completing twenty years or more of service. The unit was ordered to active duty for Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004-2006 and was instrumental in the liberation of Iraq, and many members received outstanding citations for their actions while deployed. On 20 February 2010 the unit was deactivated, though many citizens of Chanute and the surrounding area are still members of the 891st Engineer Battalion.
