The Main Residence sits on the eastern edge of Gaukler Pointe, taking advantage of views of Lake St. Clair and the surrounding landscape created by Jens Jensen. Its Tudor Revival design by architect Albert Kahn was influenced by England's Cotswold District, while its structure used up-to-date technology with reinforced concrete framing faced with four-inch-thick Briar Hill sandstone. The Fords moved into the home in September 1928, and Eleanor continued living there until 1976, long after Edsel's death and her children moved out. The estate opened to the public in 1978, fulfilling Eleanor's wish that her home be for the public benefit.
