The Cove Palisades State Park in central Oregon lies along Lake Billy Chinook, a reservoir formed when Round Butte Dam was completed on the Deschutes River in 1964 at the confluence of the Crooked, Deschutes, and Metolius rivers. Named for Billy Chinook, a Wasco guide who traveled here with John C. Frémont and Kit Carson in 1843 and 1844, the park combines recreation, historical interpretation, and striking canyon scenery. Its notable protected area, The Island, preserves a rare remnant of pre-settlement ecology. The park also reflects the mixed legacy of the dam, which provides power and recreation but has blocked migratory fish from former spawning grounds upstream.
