George W. Norris was born here on July 11, 1861, and represented his adopted state of Nebraska in Congress for forty years, ten years as a Representative and thirty years as a Senator. He was closely identified with The Tennessee Valley Authority Act of 1933, The Rural Electrification Act of 1936, and the 20th Amendment to the Constitution, which eliminated "Lame Duck" sessions of Congress. He died at McCook, Nebraska, on September 2, 1944.
