Women on both sides of the Revolutionary War refused to remain on the sidelines and made their voices heard. Penelope Barker organized the Edenton Tea Party in 1774, defying the traditional role of women and leading a protest against British taxes in one of the first major protests led by a woman. Flora MacDonald showed unbreakable loyalty and devotion by rallying her fellow Scots Highlanders before Moores Creek, then paid a high price after the battle when the Patriots took her home and her husband as prisoner. Later, the Daughters of the American Revolution carried forward this determined spirit by working with federal officials to protect the Moores Creek story from being forgotten and helping Moores Creek become part of the National Park Service in 1926.
