The North and Middle Forks unite below Saint Helens, then join the South Fork at Beattyville to form the Kentucky River, which flows 255 miles to the Ohio. The Kentucky River played a primary role in the early commerce of Lee County. Steamboats came to Beattyville, near the head of navigation, and river traffic increased with the building of locks and dams. Coal and timber were shipped to various ports.
