The I O O F Building was erected in 1864 by the International Order of Odd Fellows. Originally it measured 24 feet at the front by 80 feet along the alley, stood two stories high, and had an outside stairway on the alley side. It was expanded east to its present size in 1905, adding four windows and an inside stairway. Many lodges met upstairs, including Eastern Star, IOOF, Native Daughters, Native Sons, Pythians, Pocahantas, Rebekas, Redmen, and others. Retail businesses occupied the downstairs. Well-known long-term occupants included Dallman’s Drygoods up to 1900, Beerman’s Lincoln Meat Market from 1909 to 1905, Alexander’s Drug Store from 1916 to 1945, and Clinger’s Grocery Store from 1926 to 1955.
