Dream Mine, or Relief Mine, east of Salem, Utah, began in the 1890s after John Hyrum Koyle said the Angel Moroni revealed a hidden Nephite treasure mine there and told him to reopen it. Though substantial excavation followed and the works eventually reached thousands of feet, it never became a productive metal mine. Instead, it became the center of a prophetic movement that tied mining to financial salvation and the last days. Church leaders opposed the venture, judged its ore worthless, and eventually excommunicated Koyle. Even after mining faded, the company and believers kept the claims active, giving the site lasting cultural importance in Utah history.
