Antelope Canyon on Navajo land east of LeChee, Arizona, is a group of six slot canyon sections and the leading attraction of Lake Powell Navajo Tribal Park. Over long periods, flash flooding and other surface processes carved Navajo Sandstone into deep, twisting passages with smooth walls and shifting reflected light. Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon are the best known, with Lower narrower, more difficult to traverse, and partly flooded below. The canyon is closely tied to photography but also to serious flood danger, requiring guided access. Fatal flooding in 1997 and another dangerous event in 2010 underscored the risks in a landscape that remains one of the Southwest’s defining sights.
