Knox County's first election took place on April 4, 1808, and from 1860 to 1884 the Village of Centerburg and Hilliar Township voted at a site where a large building stood at the back of the southwest corner of the Public Square. That building housed public offices for both village and township, a private high school, and the volunteer fire department.
