Zion National Park preserves a wide-ranging historic ensemble of lodges, roads, bridges, trails, signs, residences, utility works, and remnants of earlier settlement that together rank among the strongest examples of National Park Service Rustic architecture. Built largely in the 1920s and 1930s for tourism and park administration, these works used native sandstone, timber, and regional methods to fit the canyon landscape. Gilbert Stanley Underwood designed major visitor buildings such as Zion Lodge, while Park Service planners and Civilian Conservation Corps crews created many smaller structures and transportation features, including trails, entrance stations, roads, the Zion–Mount Carmel Highway, and the Cable Creek Bridge.
