During 1914–1918, Oconee County honored its World War veterans and specifically remembered Charles McGee Byrd, a sergeant in Machine Gun Company, 118th South Carolina Infantry, 30th Division, who was wounded on October 17, 1918, in the Battle of the Somme and died on October 19 at Leonard, France.
